Solar Electric Systems
A solar electric system in a sunny California spot can have excellent financial returns for average and above energy users due to generous government rebates and incentives. Today's photovoltaic (PV) systems use highly efficient inverters and proven silicon crystalline solar modules to provide high quality electricity. There are many compelling reasons to install a grid tied PV system! The financial benefits are hard to ignore. We will provide you with a free financial analysis that objectively shows the return on investment realized from not paying a monthly electric bill. PV is becoming increasingly popular in California due to environmental awareness, high income levels, high electric prices in PG&E territory, rapidly rising fossil fuel costs, supportive government incentives (rebates and tax credits) and plenty of sunshine. |

Solar Hot Water
In the San Jose area of California a solar hot water system will generate about 83% of the annual domestic hot water needs of a typical family. By living in harmony with natural solar cycles, it is possible to use solar hot water to provide all of a household's hot water needs from May through October. Throughout the day, the sun's energy will heat a tank of water to higher temperatures than is necessary. In the morning the water is not as hot as it is in the afternoon, so if you want to live entirely on solar hot water in the summer period, it may be necessary to use the bulk of your hot water between noon and 9 PM. We can install multiple bypass valves to draw hot water directly from the solar tank during the sunny season, thus bypassing the backup water heater. Any hot water used during mid day will be replenished by the afternoon sun for free. During the winter months, preheated solar hot water supplements your natural gas or electric hot water tank, reducing water heating costs.
The economic payback of solar hot water is excellent for those currently using electricity to heat water. Installing a maintenance free ProgressivTube, passive solar hot water system, for average and above hot water users, saves money when compared to natural gas heated water. Operational costs for solar energy systems designed to be maintenance-free are virtually non-existent.
A 30% Federal income tax credit for solar energy systems is available. California is currently considering how future solar hot water rebates will be allocated. |

Solar Pool Systems
Solar pool heating systems use the sun's heat energy to extend the swimming season a few months before and after summer. These systems are typically connected to the existing pool pump. At Horizon Energy Systems we exclusively install long-lasting metal solar panels (manufactured locally) that are optimized to capture the sun's energy and transfer it into your pool to provide a comfortable water temperature for most of the year. These solar collectors can also be used to cool down the pool by running the pump at night. Solar pool heating systems have very quick payback periods (typically less than 5 years), compared to heating with fossil fuels. |

Energy Audit & System Sizing
A successful solar system installation is based on a properly sized system designed to consider current and future energy needs. Using energy efficiently will reduce the size of a solar power system and save you money up front. Using our watt hour meter, we can measure the actual energy usage of appliances. You can then determine if it makes sense to replace or recycle existing appliances.
As part of the new California Solar Initiative, a home energy audit is required for solar electric system rebate processing. For PG&E customers, the audit takes about 30 minutes and can be completed on line or by calling the Smarter Energy Line at 1-800-933-9555.
PG&E customers with a working refrigerator of at least 10 cubic feet in size may qualify to have it hauled off and get paid $35 to boot, call 1-800-299-7573 to see if your qualify for this program. Other appliances may also be picked up and recycled for a $20 fee, call 1-800-741-0172 to learn more.

Solar Monitoring Systems
Horizon Energy System can help you monitor your system performance by providing you with one of the following system monitoring options:
•Built in inverter display.
Todays grid-tied inverters display solar output production, including instantaneous AC watt output, cumulative daily kWh and cumulative lifetime solar production.
•Remote inverter monitor.
A wired or wireless remote interior monitor displays solar electric production in a convenient location inside your home.
•Connecting inverter to your PC.
Some SunPower and Xantrex inverters can be connected to your PC with a low voltage cable such as CAT 5 cable, with a serial to USB adapter. Data is periodically logged into a spreadsheet.
•Web based monitoring.
Watch real time solar production from any web browser. A local monitoring company, Fat Spaniel Technologies can provide you with this service which includes real time monitoring, summary and detailed views, historical data analysis, alert notification and more.
•Data Logging
External, data storage units can be connected to selected inverter models, for convenient solar production downloading and analysis.
Real Time monitoring can be viewed by way of the Case Studies page. |
